11 July 1940 - *The first combat action for Exeter Squadrons during the Battle.
Combat report from Squadron Leader J.S. Dewar – B Flight 87 Squadron off Portland
Having disposed of one ME110 I went into a full turn to review progress of battle and remove two other E.A. trying to get on my tail. Saw a bomb exploding by shipping in the harbour and two enemy aircraft diving for ground. One enemy aircraft still pursuing me. The Hurricane turned easily on to his tail – he was vertically banked. He then dived for ground going East – I followed but withheld fire as I was getting short of rounds. E.A. pulled out about 1,000ft and continued in S turns. I gave him a burst from about 100 yds and vapour came out of both engines. I had to slam the throttle back to avoid over shooting. Vapour then ceased to come from engine, and he gathered away again. I was very close and saw no rear gun fire so held my position and took careful non deflection shot using all ammunition. E.A. at once turned inland going very slowly. Seeing me draw away, he turned seawards again. I went to head him off and he, apparently thinking I had more rounds, turned for land again sinking slowly. At about 200ft another Hurricane came up and fired a short burst at him. He immediately turned and landed on Grange Heath (or near). Both crew got out wearing yellow jackets. Army were close by. Number of other Hurricane was UW-F (I think).

Combat Report F/O R.L. Glyde B Flight 87 Squadron
Between Portland Bill and Lightship east of Portland Bill, near a small boat 12:05hrs.
After my first combat I saw a Hurricane engaging an ME110 at about 6,000ft and I could not see any disengaged enemy Aircraft. I joined in. I fired several deflection bursts without any apparent effect, and saw the other Hurricane attacking in the same manner. The ME110 which was by now at about 3,000ft suddenly tried to escape seawards. Being slightly above him, I was able to catch him by using the boost out-out and got in a burst which produced white vapour from his engines. He dived to sea level, and I fired again from behind and slightly to one side, after which he made a controlled landing not far from a lightship, east of Portland Bill, and near to a smaller boat, which moved towards him . The aircraft sank within 30 secs, I did not see anyone get out of it. The other Hurricane who had apparently finished his ammunition, was still in the vicinity when the enemy aircraft came down and then made off towards the shore. During the fight I was fired at repeatedly by the rear gunner. Most of his bursts were wide, but one bullet made a long hole in the central panel of the hood and struck the armour plating close to my head.

Combat Report P/O D.T. Jay Blue 3, B Flight 87 Squadron
1 mile east of Portland over the bay.
On patrol with my section, the section leader sighted enemy aircraft 5,000ft above in front heading for Portland Bill, there were approximately 15 ME110s escorting bombers and on looking behind I sighted another nine, who had not seen us. We climbed and veered round behind them to 10,000ft, and dived down upon them to attack over Weymouth. One ME110 went straight across the front of me in a steep turn and I fired a burst, the enemy aircraft then went into a dive and I turned to follow on his tail, firing fairly long bursts; the enemy continued his dive and hit the sea at over 300mph.

At approximately 07:40hrs three Spitfires from 92 Squadron and two Hurricanes from 87 Squadron intercepted a lone JU88 over North Devon near Lynton. P/O R.P. Beaumont of 87 Squadron did not claim the victory as the 92 Squadron Spitfires opened fire first. The JU88A-1 came down onto Martinhoe Common and was engaged on a mission to bomb ships along the South Wales coast and in the Bristol Channel. Three of the enemy crew were taken as POW and one was killed from baling out too low. P/O R.P. Beaumont was flying Hurricane P3598 LK-L from RAF Exeter.

Flying Officer Rayner was in one of seven aircraft of ‘A’ Flight 87 Squadron which departed RAF Exeter at approximately 10:26hrs. Just off Portland at roughly 15,000 feet bombs were spotted falling around a ship. Three aircraft began their attack with three remaining at 15,000 feet and Flying Officer Rayner climbed higher to 17,000 feet which was just in cloud base. He then spotted three ME110s from his port side at right angles. He gave a short burst at starboard enemy aircraft at 100yds range with deflection bursts of two seconds. This resulted in Enemy aircraft getting a starboard engine fire, the enemy leader completed a half roll and dived from sight. Enemy number two turned and the rear gunner gave an accurate burst and then dived away. The enemy aircraft were not seen to crash but Flying Officer Rayner saw a large patch of oil on the sea, in the vicinity of the combat zone.
Flying Officer Rayner reported an unconfirmed strike to a ME110 20 miles south-east of Portland.Flight Lieutenant Gleed ‘A’ Flight 87 Squadron reports that during dive bombing attack by ME110s at 11:00hrs on the 25 July 1940 he saw one ME109 escort fighter painted with blue all over.

Pilot Officer J Cock ‘B’ Flight 87 Squadron was on patrol in Hurricane P3394 LK-M when he spotted enemy aircraft caught in a searchlight at 8,000 feet proceeding west. He followed the enemy aircraft and climbed for the attack and came within range at 17,000 feet. He fired a short burst before the enemy aircraft at 250 yards gradually closing range to 150 yards and also fired successive bursts. The rear gunner fired several bursts and then stopped with the aircraft going into a steep dive. Pilot Officer J Cock then lost sight of the enemy aircraft. He reported that one person had parachuted out. The under surface of the enemy aircraft was painted greeny blue with black crosses at wing tip extremities. The aircraft was confirmed destroyed and was identified as a Heinkel HE 111H-4. The aircraft crashed over Devon.

Between approximately 06:40 and 07:00hrs Hurricanes from 213 Squadron with a flight of 87 Squadron took off from RAF Exeter and headed towards Portland. They were joining 43 Squadron from Tangmere along with 238 Squadron. A large swarm of enemy bombers and escorts was heading across the Channel towards the Isle of Wight and Southampton. 257 Squadron from Canterbury were diverted to Tangmere to join the fray. Success came to 87 Squadron with S/L J.S. Dewar claiming a JU88 destroyed South of Bangor and P/O D.T Jay along with F/O R.L. Glyde claiming shared. 601 Squadron also joined the action with a number of enemy aircraft destroyed. Following this combat and returning to RAF Exeter, F/O R. L. Glyde was seen returning home with white vapour coming from his Hurricane P3387. This was reported as return fire from a Ju 88 South of Selsey Bill. The next time S/Ldr Dewar looked around F/O Glyde had disappeared and a search for him found nothing.
Richard Lindsay Glyde DFC aged 24 Born Perth, Australia Learned to fly with the RAAF in 1935 Joined the RAF in 1937
Joined 87 Squadron in October 1938. Combat Claims 8 with 4 being in the Battle of France
At 11:54 hours, 213 Squadron received orders to patrol Portland. Only one of ‘A’ Flight saw enemy aircraft, but Blue section of ‘B’ Flight sighted Me 110s and Me 109s and Junkers 88.
Blue section Leader Flying Officer Strickland attacked an Me 110 with one short burst of 10 rounds per gun but lost it in the clouds.
Red 3 of ‘A’ Flight Sgt Llewellyn, twice attacked a Junkers 88 with two separate bursts at 300 yards, and followed it down and claims a category 3, as he saw white patch in the sea and motorboats hurrying to the spot.
Blue 2 Pilot Officer Laricheliere followed his leader down and firstly attacked a Junkers 88 with short 2 and 4 second bursts from 100 to 300 yards, He saw the enemy aircraft dive into the sea, and whilst watching, was himself attacked by an Me 109. He climbed into the clouds and then, turning back, gave the enemy aircraft a burst of 3 seconds and watched it dive into the sea about 500 yards from where the Junkers 88 had struck the water.
The squadron returned to RAF Exeter and landed at intervals from 13:10 to 13:25.
Combat Report – P/O J E P Laricheliere – Blue 2, B Flight, 213 Squadron
3 ME11Os, 1 ME109, 1 JU88 over Portland,
I was patrolling Portland when I saw the Section Leader dive towards an ME110. I followed and saw through an opening in the clouds a JU88. I immediately stalled turned and got on his tail giving him short bursts in the starboard engine which began to emit black smoke. I followed him and played hide and seek in the cloud for 15 minutes, he was always heading to South East of Portland. Eventually I caught him up in a clear patch and put his port engine on fire and he dived straight into the sea. I could see a small motorboat rushing towards the wreck. While I was looking at the wreck, I was surprised to see an ME109. I immediately did steep climbing turns to reach the clouds, which I did, and headed south for a few minutes thinking that I would not be followed there. Then I came back again through the clouds to find the ME109 inspecting the wreck. I gave him a burst of about 3 seconds and saw him give a sudden upward jerk, stall, and dive into the sea in flames approximately 500 yds from the JU88.
Note: Had it not been for someone jamming the R/T by leaving transmitter on the enemy casualties would have been much higher. It took me at least five to ten minutes before my warning of enemy presence at that height was conveyed to the rest of the Squadron.

12 aircraft of 213 Squadron took off from RAF Exeter at 15:21 hours to patrol Portland. Leader of Red section ‘A’ Flight, Flight Lieutenant Sing saw about 30 Me 110s and 20 Me 109s 15 miles south west of Portland Bill below him and attacked. He himself attacked an Me 110 but was in turn attacked by an Me 109 so turned on to the latter and after two bursts of 4 seconds each watched it crash into the sea.
Meanwhile his Yellow 1 Pilot Officer Osmand had shot down an Me 109 and Red 3 Sergeant Bushell had put a long burst into an Me 109 and saw a piece fall from the port wing.
‘B’ Flight had seen and climbed to enemy aircraft above cloud at 10,000 feet where leader of Green Section Pilot Officer Atkinson shot down a straggling Me 109 and expended the rest of his ammunition on another while Blue 2 Pilot Officer Larichelier put in one burst of 1 second into an Me 110 and blew it to pieces. This was the first time the squadron had been using De Wilde ammunition.
Hurricane P3348 (AK-B) failed to return from action over Portland at 16:50. Sergeant P. P. Norris was killed and the aircraft destroyed.

Green section of 213 Squadron on patrol at 16,000 feet above Seaton just above rough cloud sighted three He.111s. Green 2 Pilot Officer H. D. Atkinson attacked one from astern and fired one burst bringing its undercarriage down. After another burst the engine stopped and It caught fire. The crew of 4 bailed out. In the meantime, Blue 1 Pilot Officer Sizer had attacked another He.111 and saw smoke coming out of it before he lost it in the clouds. All four of our aircraft returned safely to RAF Exeter at 20:50 hours. Pilot Officer Atkinson who was in Hurricane R4099 had sustained damage to his aircraft from return fire from a He. 111 over Lyme Bay. He managed to land but was injured with small pieces of Bakelite in his left forearm. Although the Hurricane was damaged it was repairable.

At 17:15 hours 13 aircraft of 213 Squadron took off from RAF Exeter to intercept raiders at Portland. At 17:25 hours a terrific number of enemy aircraft were encountered and the largest dogfight in which the squadron has yet taken part developed. Each of our pilots selected his own particular enemy aircraft and having shot it down turned onto another. All of our aircraft returned safely to RAF Exeter with the exception of one, Pilot Officer M. S. H. C. Buchin, who was reported missing in Hurricane V7227 (AK-C).
Hurricane W6669 (AK-Q) was damaged after being hit in the wing during combat with Bf 110s off Portland at 17:45. The aircraft returned to RAF Exeter where the aircraft was repaired. The pilot Sergeant R. D. Dunscombe was unhurt.
87 Squadron, 11 aircraft took off from Exeter at 17:30 hours for Portland. On arriving at Portland each flight seems to have encountered a separate circle of enemy aircraft going, round and round. What has been described as the fiercest fight yet took place, it was a lightning dog-fight which can hardly be described on paper, apart from pilots say they fired short bursts at other enemy aircraft but could not stop to see the results. Included in enemy aircraft casualties is one ME 110 destroyed by Pilot Officer Comely, who was himself shot down in the combat.
Squadron Leader T. G. Lovell-Gregg in Hurricane P3215 crashed at Abbotsbury, Dorset. The Hurricane caught fire and the pilot was killed in an endeavour to force land. The aircraft it would appear, had stalled, and crashed through trees surrounding the field and caught fire and was totally destroyed. The instrument panel from this aircraft was recovered and is now in Peter Foote’s collection.
Hurricane P3465 force-landed at Symondsbury near Bridport following combat over Portland at 18:00. Sergeant J. Cowley was slightly injured in the incident and admitted to Bridport hospital. The aircraft was a write-off.
Hurricane P2872 was shot down by a Bf 110 and crashed into the sea off Portland at 18:05. Pilot Officer P. W. Comeley was reported as missing. The aircraft was lost.
Hurricane R2687 was damaged by a Bf 109 in combat over Portland at 18:10. The pilot force-landed on a field at Barn Farm, Radipole. Pilot Officer D. T. Jay was uninjured. The aircraft was damaged but repaired later.

Large scale attacks by the Luftwaffe took place today. At 14:07 hours 213 Squadron took off from RAF Exeter with 12 Hurricanes to patrol St Catherine’s Point. Pilot Officer H D Atkinson destroyed an Me 109 five miles south of Ventor. Many other squadrons were involved in the fray including 601, 152, 43, 602 and 234 squadrons. The combat took place mainly over West Sussex between 14:00 – 15:30 hours. German losses were heavy.

Whilst Red Section of 213 Squadron were patrolling base an enemy aircraft was intercepted. Sgt Llewellyn was sent by his leader to investigate and saw a Ju88 proceeding south-east. When he was 800 feet astern of it, it fired a cannon at him, and Llewelyn replied with a short burst. Enemy aircraft then flew into cloud but when it emerged at the top Llewelyn carried out a beam attack. He opened fire at 250 yards closing to 150 with a burst of 2-3 seconds. The enemy aircraft emitted a considerable amount of smoke and then there was a glow of fire. No one was seen to bale out. Llewelyn returned to RAF Exeter at 13:50 hours.

20 August 1940
At 18:19 hours two aircraft of Red Section, 213 Squadron took off to patrol Seaton. Three Ju88s were encountered and chased over Exeter and back to Newton Abbot where the flight closed with them just after they had dropped bombs on the railway station. Red Leader attacked one and saw his bullets rake the enemy aircraft from stem to stern. He then chased another out to sea and silenced the rear gunner. In the meantime, Red 2 had attacked another and saw a large piece of the enemy aircraft fall off. Enquiries were made at the time to confirm rumours that at least one enemy aircraft was seen to crash into the sea.

22 August 1940
Pilot Officer J. A. L. Phillipart of 213 Squadron, R.A.F. Exeter, was patrolling Exmouth at 30,000 feet as Yellow Leader (section of 2 planes). He spotted an unidentified aircraft coming from the south. He approached the enemy aircraft and recognised it as Ju88. Followed by Yellow 2 he went into a beam attack, the effect of which was the enemy aircraft released its bombs into the sea. Pilot Officer Phillipart then made a vertical diving attack followed by an astern attack. The enemy aircraft caught fire between the starboard engine and the fuselage. The enemy aircraft then dived into the sea in a large gliding turn. Four members of the crew baled out but only one parachute opened correctly.
P.O. Phillipart noted that the black crosses on the fuselage were inside a circle from certain distance.

25 August 1940
Fifteen Hurricanes of 213 Squadron departed from RAF Exeter at 16:59 hours to intercept enemy raiders at Portland. The enemy were intercepted at 17:23 hours and a general dogfight ensued. Several pilots remarked about the improved armament on the ME109s.
Thirteen Hurricanes of 87 Squadron also intercepted a large raid about 5 miles west of Portland. The raid consisted of Ju88s escorted by Me110s and Me109s. B Flight went for the Ju88s and the Me110 went for B Flight. A Flight then attacked the Me110s. Some of the Me110s were seen to fire red Verey lights, apparently as a signal to the Me109s to come down, which they did. A general dogfight ensued.
Combat Report – W/Cdr J. S. Dewar - B Flight, 87 Squadron
Led Squadron to patrol Warmwell at 10,000 ft as ordered. Sighted AA bursts over Portland but no aircraft. Then sighted large enemy force coming westwards along coast. Selected the Squadron of JU88s least escorted and led in on a quarter attack. Fired about 800 rounds. As I pulled away, I saw aircraft smoking. F/Sgt Badger who was following saw it burst into flames. It must have fallen near Lulworth. Later it was confirmed by Observer Corps that one fell there. I continued my turn on pulling away and went for about four 110s head-on, taking a fleeting burst at one. By the time I had turned round again I could see no aircraft. Every now and then one dropped out smoking. The bombers seemed to be making out to sea. Very high over Portland way a white Verey light was fired. I flew climbing towards the west, turning now and again to sweep the sky above. During one of these turns I almost collided with an ME109 turning in the opposite direction. I started to pursue as he went past me and saw that he was the leader of 4. They did not seem to have seen me, so I joined them in the rear. Unfortunately, their initial speed did not allow me to get nearer than about 600 yds and although I had 9+ on the boost I could not catch up. As they turned, however, I slowly gained. When about 300 yds away I opened fire on the rearmost in short bursts. He immediately turned more steeply than the rest and increased speed, but not before vapour came pouring from him. His manoeuvre carried him to the front of the others, and I had to break off action with him. Last seen he was diving at about 45o slightly banked and may have come down near Lulworth also on the land or in the sea. Fumes were pouring from him. I suspect he carried armour as I fired at least 800 rounds with almost dead astern shots. The others quickly climbed out of reach. I was greatly handicapped by lack of speed. Seeing no further activity and being short of ammunition I returned to base without seeing any of my Squadron since the first encounter. I consider that greater effect would be got from our attacks and less losses suffered if we patrolled in larger numbers, if possible two Squadrons going together. Twin-engined bombers can take terrific punishment from the rear and their own shooting was greatly improved. I consider it a mistake to attack from the rear if any other method is possible. With fighter escorts only fleeting attacks can be made making it difficult to obtain conclusive results.
Combat Report - S/Ldr I R Gleed - A Flight, 87 Squadron
I led attack with Flight covering rear of ‘B’ Flight. Attacked 10 ME110s who were diving out of the sun on ‘B’ Flight. Shot one down and saw it splash in sea with 4 others, were attacked by about 20 ME110s, shot at one which rolled on back, got good shot whilst it was on back, had to break off owing to E/A getting on my tail. Sgt Howell saw the E/A I shot at still upside down. Later was attacked from above by two 109s, one of which overshot me and got a good burst up its tail. The other was near my tail so I aileron turned down and left them. The E/A then sheared off to sea.

Combat Report – F/O K W Tait - A Flight, 87 Squadron
Contacted E/A at 18,000 approx. 30 ME110s. Saw leader of 110s fire two red Verey lights evidently calling for 109s to come down. They did. Attacked one 110 trying to enter circle. After three bursts he dived away with one engine stopped and crashed into sea. Attacked a 109 from directly above – full deflection – Spitfires also attacked it from beam and 109 crashed on land behind Chesil Bank.
109 painted light blue with broad red band round fuselage. Editor’s Note. This red band around the nose cowling was applied to JG53 Aircraft

Combat Report – P/O R P Beamont - B Flight, 87 Squadron
We attacked the main bomber formation from 1,000 feet above and out of the sun. I fired a long burst from the beam at a Do17, closing to fifty yards and the E/A turned on its back with smoke pouring out and dived towards the sea. At 4,000 feet I engaged an ME109 and after some minutes forced it down into a field between Abbotsbury and Weymouth and about 1 mile inland. The pilot appeared unhurt and set fire to his machine.

Although not shown on the actual operational records, it is known that Acting Wing Commander John Scatliff-Dewar, DFC,DSO, C/O of 87 Squadron and soon to be RAF Exeter's first Station Commander when promoted to the permanent rank of Wing Commander, took off on a unofficial flight from RAF Exeter. He was heading for RAF Tangmere in a Hurricane to visit his wife, but sadly he failed to arrive.
It has been speculated that he may have observed enemy aircraft and decided to join the combat on his own but was shot down into the Channel. His body was washed ashore many days later, with evidence to suggest that he may have been killed during his parachute descent. He was not reported missing until the following day and some records show his date of death as the 12 September rather than the 11 September. He was 33 years old. John Dewar was the highest-ranking airman to have been killed during the Battle of Britain on this day.

Dual flying in Mentor aircraft, formation practice and other forms of flying training made up a total of 10 hours 55 minutes flying.
The Miles Mentor aircraft was introduced into the RAF in 1938 as a trainer and communications mount. The first prototype (Serial L4392) first flew on 5 January 1938. An order for 45 aircraft was received and they were all delivered to the Royal Air Force between April 1938 and February 1939. They were mainly used by No. 24 Squadron and by RAF station flights.
Remarkably only one aircraft managed to survive the Second World War. It was Serial number L4420 which was sold for civilian use in May 1946 and civilian registered G-AHKM. Sadly It crashed on 1 April 1950 at Clayhidon, in Devon and was destroyed. This makes another piece of remarkable history related to the RAF Exeter area.

15 September 1940 - Battle of Britain Day
On Sunday, 15 September 1940, the Luftwaffe launched an ‘all out’ large scale attack to try and destroy the RAF. The largest and most concentrated attacks were also against London in the hope of drawing out the RAF into a battle of annihilation. Around 1,500 aircraft took part in the air battles which lasted until dusk. This action was the really the climax of the Battle of Britain. This is now why we now know this to be Battle of Britain Day.
It is recorded in history that off the Devon coast a lone reconnaissance aircraft was detected and a flight from 87 Squadron Exeter (Hurricanes) was "Scrambled". It turned out to be a He111 on weather reconnaissance and was shot down by P/O D.T. Jay. Strangely I cannot find an Operational Record of this fact, this makes me unsure and question why it was not recorded?

Pilot Officer Whitney-Straight flew many sorties throughout the day. Eventually becoming Air Commodore Whitney Willard Straight, he had an interesting career and was responsible for establishing many airfields and flying clubs including Exeter. Reflection
This date in 1940 is now recognised as the official end to the Battle of Britain. Our Island had stood its ground and although damaged, we had survived the biggest threat with pride. Everyone pulling together and with the help and support of Allied Countries such as Poland, Czechoslovakia and Canada, to name just a few. The war was far from over, but history was made by stopping the Nazi invasion in its tracks. RAF Exeter had played its part and would continue to do so in the future war years.
We have followed the RAF Exeter Squadrons activities from the 10 July to this milestone day. That’s 113 separate daily posts and I have basically copied the official records onto my own Word document then used it to copy and paste each day into this website and Facebook page. In doing so I now have a comprehensive document outlining the Operational Records as best I can. It has been hard but enjoyable work and through the process I have learnt so much more about 87, 213 and 601 Squadrons.
