Book of Remembrance
Today and always, we remember all those who served, and of those who gave their lives, from all nations, whilst serving at RAF Exeter, Devon, between 1940 – 1945.
The messages below were written into the book of remembrance provided at the Exeter Airport D-Day 80 event held in the terminal building 5/6 June 2024.
So brave, an inspiration to us all.

My Father, Witold Lanowski, flew spitfires out of here with 317 Squadron in early 1942. He went on to fly Thunderbolts with the USAAF. Alan, 5 June 2024.

I was born in Sept 1944 and it has taken until now for me to have found out the massive effort made by everyone, military and civilian, to save our country and Europe. I was never so humbled as I visited the Normandy beaches in 1986. On active duty with the US Navy, I felt a bond with my fellow comrades on Utah beach. Living in Exeter for 26 years, it is wonderful to see this display at Exeter Airport honouring this historical day.

We should remember them all but it's important to remember an individual if you can. On a visit to Colleville - Sur-Mer cemetery in 2016, we picked at random such an individual: Corporal Donald Everett Bignell of the 101st Airborne. He trained for a parachute drop he never made as his aircraft was lost at Magneville on the morning of 6 June 1944. We remember Donald of Chalk15, 'Donna Mae' the C47 which flew from Station 463 at Exeter. Cdr Stuart Robinson RN, 6 June 2024.

Carol Wills, Gloucestershire - near to RAF Fairford. Visited today for a connection to my late Father Eddie who was stationed in Exeter prior to going over on D-Day, landing on Gold beach being billeted in Bayeux, France.
